Case Study

Suttons Primary School

A SEND classroom fencing package that developed into a wider safeguarding and automated access control upgrade across the school site.

PROJECT OVERVIEW

Location: Suttons Ln, Hornchurch.

Sector:  Education

Contract Amount:  £122,380

Background: Alltype Fencing Specialists Ltd were initially asked to tender for works connected to a new SEND classroom building at Sutton School in Havering, Essex. The original package included new perimeter fencing around the new building, repairs to existing fencing, an automated cantilever sliding gate, access-control-ready gates, and handrail and balustrade works. Following successful completion, the school requested further safeguarding upgrades across the wider site.

Solution: The initial project formed part of a new-build SEND classroom scheme, where the school required secure fencing around the new area, repairs to existing fence lines and improved vehicle access control. We installed an automated cantilever sliding gate, including a rollback cage for safety, and prepared selected gates for access control installation by others. The works also included balustrade and handrail installations in two locations around the site.

Following the first phase, the school requested a significant package of additional safeguarding works. This included the installation of a further automated vehicle entrance/exit gate, along with two pedestrian access-controlled gates. Due to the distance between the gates and the school buildings, and because the system needed to serve two schools with differing requirements, a GSM-based access control system was agreed as the most suitable solution.

Alltype coordinated the associated ducting works, which included over 100 metres of tarmac excavation, duct installation and reinstatement. The two pedestrian gates were installed as self-closing gates to support safeguarding and day-to-day access control.

Careful sequencing was required throughout the project, as works were carried out across both a live school environment and school holiday periods. The most disruptive elements were planned for the holidays to minimise disruption. We also helped coordinate discussions between the two schools to agree a practical access strategy that worked for all parties. The completed system has since been checked on site and is operating as intended, with the school satisfied with the outcome.
